With major avalanches gaining headlines throughout North America, Black Diamond Equipment Ltd., a global leader in climbing and backcountry gear, continues to gain field acceptance for the innovative AvaLung among snow professionals, patrollers and operators of helicopter skiing outfits.
³We are exceptionally pleased with how the AvaLung 2 is steadily becoming a part of the standard backcountry avalanche kit,² states Peter Metcalf, Black Diamond CEO ³ From the beginning, we realized that the AvaLung would only gain acceptance with serious users over time. The AvaLung has proven itıs utility in the field and is continuing to gain international acceptance with avalanche forecasters, patrollers and backcountry guides.²
In the past month, major slides have claimed the lives of backcountry skiers in Canada, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. Avalanches have reached headline status in major newspapers across the country while the Canadian Government is considering a national policy for winter backcountry recreation in their national parks.
Among the organizations using the AvaLung this season in North America are the helicopter services Selkirk Tangiers, Canada and Valdez Heli Camps, Alaska, as well as ski patrols in Breckenridge, Colorado and Solitude, Utah. Mountain Rescue and avalanche forecasters which use the AvaLung include the Alpine Rescue Team in Evergreen, Colorado; Mount Washington Avalanche Center, New Hampshire; Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Specialists, Montana; American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education, Colorado; and Haute Gaspesie Avalanche Centre, Quebec. In Europe both ENSA the National Alpine and Ski School in Chamonix, France, and the Rescue Team in Zermatt Switzerland use the AvaLung. Additionally, Black Diamond has provided AvaLungs to Teton Gravity Research, a Jackson, Wyoming, based Film Company for use on their athletes during filming in avalanche prone terrain.
³ We developed the AvaLung because as end users ourselves, we have personally lost friends in avalanches,² states Metcalf. ³ To see this product gain acceptance and to hear about documented saves in the backcountry is a tribute to the dedication of our design team and their determination to bring this product to market.²
